Question: Arnold Bennett's presentation of Emily. (Nov-07)
Answer: Emily is shown a sensitive delicate self effacing angelic rich heiress, she has made the mistake of choosing the wrong man as her husband. Franting is a crud, gruff, rude, stout, orthodox barbaric boxer in contrast to Lomax Harder, a suave, soft spoken, tall, fair, intelligent poet, a thorough gentleman to whom she finally turns for help.
The two men in her life represent the two extreme kinds. She lands up becoming the cause of getting one murdered by the other. Like the Even she brings out the worst in both the men. Lomax the sensitive gentlemanly polished poet becomes the murderer and the gruff strong barbaric boxer is reduced to the state of being financially supported by a woman, his own wife and ends up confessing suicide to the gun shop owner and frantically incites Lomax to kill him.
